In the past, mobile phones were just about making phone calls or sending and receiving SMSes. Some devices had games installed too. There have been rapid developments since then. There has a been a great evolution in software and designs, along with improvements in sensor tech, cameras and wireless functionality.

Your phone is likely to recognise you. the development of fingerprint and iris scanners have taken us a step closer to this, as phones of the future are more likely to respond to the voice of owners, or even the shape of the face, thanks to face recognition technology. 

Augmented Reality could also go mainstream in the mobile technology world. We’ve already seen what it has done in the gaming world, but for mobile phones it could mean that images may be projected into the real world. 

Phones may be foldable and will be more flexible and durable. Sapphire glass, already being used in some wearable technology, may be used to create more flexible mobile devices. While it may seem like a return to the flip phone era for some, in reality it’s a step forward in technological advancements. 

One of the main criticisms of smartphones has been poor battery life. This is mainly a result of faster processors which offer a great number of benefits, but also drain battery life. Kinetic energy or hydrogen fuel cells may be a solution. 

Virtual assistants will be the norm. Home screens will be personalised, based on user patterns. We’ve already seen some developments in this direction, with more virtual assistants in smart devices and even in some cars. Mobile phones will become more equipped with the ability to predict the behaviour of users, based on patterns that it stores.
